Parents and babies together in the pool

Baby Swimming Lessons

Gentle water familiarisation for babies from 3 months, in our warm 32° indoor pool.

We love baby swimming lessons here at Marlins! Our teachers work to encourage bonding between parent and child; that’s what makes the class extra special! Water confidence and comfort are our main priorities. We do this by working with the natural love that babies have for water. Often, a lot of the instructor’s time is spent developing the confidence of the parent and enabling them to support their child effectively in the water. Our baby swimming lessons in Mackay are designed to be child-led. We encourage the babies to decide when they are ready to put their faces in the water. It is a bonding experience like no other and a unique opportunity for connection. Generally, our tadpoles are ready to progress to our starfish swimming lessons at 6 months old, depending on their levels of strength and coordination.

1/ Safe Pool Entry and Exit: Both adults and babies will learn how to enter and exit the pool safely together.

2/Floating on Back and Gliding on Front: Babies will practice floating on their backs or gliding on their fronts using movements like pancakes and sliding side to side around the pool. They will also learn to return to an upright position with full support from an adult.

3/Experiencing Water Movement: Babies will become familiar with different water movements around their bodies. We will encourage different movements in the water like lifting, swaying, swinging, rocking, bouncing, swinging, dipping, and cradle holds. These activities will be conducted with relaxed support from the parent.

4/Familiarity and Comfort with Water on the Head: After a clear signal from an adult, babies will become comfortable and familiar with the feeling of water travelling down the back of their heads, arms, and legs.

5/ Swimming with Buoyancy Aid: Using a buoyancy aid, babies will swim while being supported on the parent’s shoulder or chest.

What to Bring to Baby Swimming Lessons

A short list — baby swimming lessons need less gear than most parents expect.

A "Happy Nappy"

All babies and children under three must wear a reusable swim nappy — a "Happy Nappy" — available from our front desk. A regular disposable nappy is not suitable for the pool.

Two Towels

One for the pool deck and one for the change room. Little bodies lose heat fast once they are out of the water, so a hooded towel is ideal for babies.

Warm Clothes for After

In cooler months our pool area is warmer than outside. Dress your baby warmly before leaving the centre and avoid going straight out into the wind.

The Five Skills Your Baby Will Learn

1. Safe Pool Entry and Exit

Both adults and babies learn how to get into and out of the pool safely together — the first and most important water-safety habit.

2. Floating on Back and Gliding on Front

Babies practise floating on their backs and gliding on their fronts using playful movements like pancakes and slides.

3. Experiencing Water Movement

Babies become familiar with different water movements around their bodies, encouraging natural, relaxed responses.

4. Comfort with Water on the Head

After a clear signal from an adult, babies grow comfortable with water travelling down the back of their head, arms and legs.

5. Swimming with a Buoyancy Aid

Using a buoyancy aid, babies swim while supported on a parent’s shoulder or chest — their first taste of independent movement.
